The 1800’s witnessed a proliferation of architectural styles unparalleled in history. By that time, much of the eastern United States had been tamed, and the frontier continued to move westward. People were less concerned with survival, and had more resources available. There were other reasons also, with technology being foremost. The Industrial Revolution begun in England had spread to Europe and North America. Machines quickly and cheaply manufactured hardware and ornamentation such as gingerbread, tile, and art glass. Improvements were also made in central heating, indoor plumbing, and ultimately gas and electrical power. Introduction of the railroad provided easy access to materials. As a result, our Victorian ancestors left us a wonderful legacy of houses, churches, and other buildings. |
